Frequently asked questions

What is a version 4 UUID?

A v4 UUID is a 128-bit identifier where 122 bits are random. The third group always starts with 4 (the version) and the fourth group starts with 8, 9, a or b (the variant).

Can two UUIDs collide?

In practice, no. You would need to generate about 2.7 quintillion v4 UUIDs to have a 50% chance of a single duplicate.

Is a UUID the same as a GUID?

Yes. GUID is Microsoft's name for the same format. GUIDs are often written in uppercase and wrapped in braces.
