Frequently asked questions
How do I write Morse code so it decodes correctly?
Use . for a dot and - for a dash, one space between letters and / between words. Three or more spaces also count as a word gap. Typographic dots and dashes such as · or − are accepted and converted.
What are prosigns and how do I enter them?
Prosigns are procedure signals sent as one run with no gap between letters, such as SK (end of contact) or SOS. Type them in angle brackets, like <SK> or <SOS>. AR, BT, KN and AS share their codes with +, =, ( and &, so they decode as those characters.
What happens to characters Morse does not have?
Letters with accents, emoji and symbols outside the international Morse set are skipped and listed under the result, so you know what was left out. Unknown codes when decoding show as and are listed too.
How is the audio speed worked out?
With the standard PARIS timing. At W words per minute a dot lasts 1200 / W milliseconds, a dash three dots, the gap between letters three dots and between words seven. The tone is a 600 Hz sine wave played by your browser.
