Frequently asked questions

How is ROI calculated?

ROI = (final value − amount invested) ÷ amount invested × 100. Investing 1,000 and ending with 1,500 is a 50% ROI.

What is annualised ROI?

It is the steady yearly return that would produce the same result, also called CAGR: (final ÷ initial)^(1 ÷ years) − 1. A 50% gain over 3 years is about 14.47% a year, not 16.67%.

Why does annualising a short holding period look extreme?

Annualising assumes the same return repeats every period for a full year. A 5% gain in one month annualises to almost 80%, which is rarely realistic.
