About the Average Calculator

Paste a list of numbers to get the mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, variance, quartiles, and geometric and harmonic means at once.

How to use the Average Calculator

  1. Paste or type your numbers. Separate them with spaces, commas, semicolons or new lines; a column copied from a spreadsheet works too.
  2. The statistics update as you type. Choose a quartile method if you need to match a particular calculator or spreadsheet.
  3. Copy the full report, or the sorted list of numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted (or the average of the two middle values). The mode is the value that appears most often. The median is less affected by outliers: one huge value pulls the mean but barely moves the median.

Should I use population or sample standard deviation?

Use population (divide by n) when your numbers are the whole group you care about. Use sample (divide by n − 1) when they're a sample used to estimate a larger population; this is what Excel's STDEV.S and most statistics courses mean by default.

Why are there two ways to work out quartiles?

There's no single agreed definition. Linear interpolation matches Excel's QUARTILE.INC and Google Sheets; the median-of-halves method matches TI calculators and many textbooks. They can give different answers for small lists, so pick the one your course or software uses.

When is there no mode, or more than one?

If every number appears exactly once there's no mode. If two or more values tie for most frequent, they're all listed as modes.

Can I use commas as thousands separators?

No: commas separate numbers here, so 1,234 is read as 1 and 234. Write 1234 instead. Decimals use a point, for example 3.5.
