Frequently asked questions

How is the required final score calculated?

Your final grade is current grade × (1 − final weight) + final score × final weight. Solving for the final score gives (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. With 82% now, a final worth 30% and a target of 85%: (85 − 82 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 92%.

What should I enter as my current grade?

Your grade in the class so far, before the final, as a percentage of the work already graded. Most online gradebooks show this. If yours shows points, divide points earned by points possible and multiply by 100.

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

The weighted average divides by the total of the weights you entered, so each category counts in proportion to its weight. That's handy mid-term when only some categories have been graded, and the result notes when the total isn't 100%.

Does this work with letter grades?

Enter the percentage that matches the letter grade you want on your school's scale, for example 90 for an A on many US scales. Scales vary, so check your syllabus.
