Frequently asked questions
How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Rewrite both over their lowest common denominator, then add the numerators. For 1/2 + 1/3 the lowest common denominator is 6, so it becomes 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
How do I divide fractions?
Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: flip it upside down. 3/4 ÷ 1/8 = 3/4 × 8/1 = 24/4 = 6.
How are negative mixed numbers read?
The minus sign applies to the whole number, so -1 1/2 means −(1 + 1/2) = −3/2, not −1 + 1/2.
Why does the decimal sometimes show a repeating part?
A fraction only has a terminating decimal if its simplified denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. Others repeat forever, so the calculator shows a rounded value and the repeating block in brackets, such as 1/6 = 0.1(6).
