About the GPA Calculator

Calculate your semester GPA from letter grades and credits on a 4.0 scale, with optional honors and AP weighting and a cumulative GPA that includes past terms.

How to use the GPA Calculator

  1. Enter each course's letter grade and credit hours. Course names are optional. Add or remove rows as needed.
  2. Tick weighted GPA to add 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB courses, and choose whether your school counts A+ as 4.3.
  3. To get a cumulative GPA, enter your previous GPA and the credits it covers.

Examples

Four courses, unweighted

Input

A (4 cr), B+ (3 cr), A− (3 cr), B (4 cr)

Output

Semester GPA 3.50 over 14 credits
Same courses weighted (AP calculus, honors English)

Input

A AP (4 cr), B+ honors (3 cr), A− (3 cr), B (4 cr)

Output

Semester GPA 3.89 over 14 credits
With a previous 3.20 GPA over 60 credits

Input

A (4 cr), B+ (3 cr), A− (3 cr), B (4 cr); previous 3.20 / 60 cr

Output

Semester GPA 3.50 over 14 credits; cumulative GPA 3.26 over 74 credits

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Each letter grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 and so on down to F = 0), multiplied by the course's credits, and the total is divided by the total credits. A 4-credit A and a 3-credit B give (16 + 9) ÷ 7 = 3.57.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA treats every course the same on a 4.0 scale. A weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder courses, commonly 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, so it can go above 4.0. This calculator gives no bonus to an F. Schools vary, so check your school's policy.

Is an A+ worth 4.0 or 4.3?

It depends on the school. Many high schools and colleges cap an A+ at 4.0, while some count it as 4.3. Use the A+ option to match your school's scale.

How do I combine this semester with my previous GPA?

Enter your previous cumulative GPA and the credits it was based on. The calculator multiplies them to recover your earlier grade points, adds this semester's points, and divides by all credits together.
