Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the salary by the hours you're paid for in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that's 2,080 hours, so 50,000 a year is 50,000 ÷ 2,080 = 24.04 an hour. A quick rule of thumb is to halve the salary and drop the thousands: 50,000 → about 25.
What's the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?
Biweekly means every two weeks, which is 26 paychecks a year (occasionally 27). Semi-monthly means twice a month, usually on fixed dates, which is 24 paychecks a year. The same salary gives a slightly smaller biweekly check than a semi-monthly one.
Should paid holidays reduce the hours?
No. If holidays and vacation are paid, you are still paid for 52 weeks, so leave the defaults. Only reduce paid weeks or add unpaid days off for time you aren't paid for, such as unpaid leave or a contract with weeks off between assignments.
Is this before or after tax?
Before. Every figure is gross pay. Tax, social security, pension contributions and other deductions depend on where you live and your circumstances, so take-home pay will be lower.
