About the Domain WHOIS Lookup

Look up who a domain is registered with, when it was created and when it expires, plus its status codes, nameservers and DNSSEC, using the registry's RDAP data.

How to use the Domain WHOIS Lookup

  1. Enter a domain name, such as example.com, or a public IP address. A full URL works too; only the host name is used.
  2. Press Look up. PithLab's server finds the right registry in IANA's RDAP directory and asks it for the registration record.
  3. Read the registrar, the created, updated and expiry dates, the status codes explained in plain English, the nameservers and whether DNSSEC is on.

Examples

A long-registered domain

Input

example.com

Output

Registrar, created 14 Aug 1995, expiry date, transfer locks and the IANA nameservers

Frequently asked questions

What is RDAP, and how is it different from WHOIS?

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern replacement for WHOIS. It returns the same registration facts as structured data over HTTPS, and ICANN requires it for every generic top-level domain, so results are consistent and easy to read.

Why can't I see the owner's name and email?

Since GDPR, most registries and registrars redact personal details. You'll usually see the registrar and an abuse contact instead. To reach an owner, use the registrar's contact form or the abuse address shown.

Why does my country's domain say RDAP isn't available?

Some country-code registries don't publish an RDAP service yet. Their data is only available from the registry's own WHOIS website.

What does client transfer prohibited mean?

It's a transfer lock set by the registrar, and it's a good thing: nobody can move the domain to another registrar without you unlocking it first. Each status code is explained next to the result.
