Examples

Add 20% to a net price of 100

Input

Add VAT: 100 at 20%

Output

100.00 + 20% VAT (20.00) = 120.00
Take 15% out of a gross price of 230

Input

Remove VAT: 230 at 15%

Output

230.00 includes 30.00 VAT at 15%, so the net amount is 200.00

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 net, so the VAT is 20. Don't just take 20% off the gross price: 20% of 120 is 24, which is too much.

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. At 15%, 200 × 1.15 = 230, of which 30 is tax.

Are the preset rates official?

No. The preset buttons are common example rates only. VAT and GST rates differ by country and by type of goods and change over time, so check the current rate with your tax authority.

Does this work for GST and sales tax too?

Yes. Any tax charged as a flat percentage of the price works the same way, whatever it is called locally.
